Varnishing artwork: Worth the fumes?

Everything you need to know about varnishing artwork!

The varnish is nothing but a protective layer. It is basically resin diluted with a liquid.

Resin is a substance extracted from trees or plants and is highly flammable. The resin was chosen as the base for varnish because it is insoluble in water and hardens after drying. It is even solely used for the purpose but is toxic and precautions must be taken while using it. But when mixed with different solutions it gives the varnish its texture that can be glossy, matte, neutral, etc.

Why?

Paintings need protection from diverse weather and climatic conditions.

We need to varnish the painting to give it a longer life.

How?

You may brush it or spray it or if you want just resin to cover your painting, pour it!

Best brush for varnishing:

Flat brushes are used to cover large spaces on canvas quickly and nicely.

They are used for priming the canvas before throwing paint on it to give it a good spread and covering all nooks and corners including the sides.

The same brush is wonderful for varnishing the canvas too. As important as it is to reach all crevices and texture troughs on painting, spreading it evenly in just the right amount to smooth it out is even more necessary.

So go for flat brushes :)

Important facts and precautions:

1) Ventilation:

It is extremely important for the area to be cross-ventilated. Components of varnish are toxic and they emit harmful fumes.

2)Avoid overflow: Use little amount and then add more instead of adding a lot at once. It takes double or sometimes triple coats to give it a good layer. It is quick to dry and you will be known if it is going wrong. It doesn't hold true in case of spray varnish though.

Since you have put so much hard work in your artwork, it doesn't hurt to add another hour to it instead of rushing it.

3)It is irremovable: If varnish goes paint goes. It is taken out by adding solvents and sandpaper scraping. So think multiple times before adding the varnish coat because it might spoil the artwork bad if you think of removing it later.

4)Changes the look of painting:

There are different kinds of varnish available which may have a change in look after you put on the painting. It may keep it neutral, add a good gloss, or make it matte. So choose the product wisely.

5) Wear the mask and wash your hands post varnishing.
